The majority of primates living in the wild do so in large family groups and at Monkeyland they live in the same way.
We do not collect species. We care for rescued primates and do all we can to give them as natural a life as possible in the habitat we have access to. At present, Monkeyland cares for over 550 primates which are spread across 9 species – listed below:
All of the primates in our Special Monkey Home are here because of their quirks, disabilities and/or their old age. Some have poor eyesight, others have injured or amputated limbs, some are ‘slow’ and the rest are, well, just old and grumpy. Nevertheless, they are all very special and we do what we can to give them the lives they deserve.
We don’t always know where they come from or what they’ve been through and, often, it is better not to ask. Humans aren’t euthanised when they’ve lost their eyesight, developed a limp or are a bit long-in-the-tooth. The same is true for our special monkeys and we’ll continue to provide them with the best care we can until their final days.

The Monkeyland and Birds of Eden forests are Afromontane forests. Afromontane forests manifest in distinct strata of herbs and shrubbery, canopy trees and emergent trees, which can grow to be 40 metres tall.
Monkeyland constantly runs an internal reforestation program and, to this end, regularly have specials during which people can donate indigenous trees (endemic to our forests) instead of paying an entry fee. For more information on an upcoming special please contact Lara.
It is worth mentioning that the Birds of Eden forest exists on what used to be a farm dumpsite. Over the years Monkeyland and Birds of Eden have worked continuously to ensure the longevity of the forests in and around the sanctuaries.
